FLUX Video Upscale Guide: Turn Blurry Phone Video Into Sharp 4K for About $1
Your phone video looks soft. Your client’s AI-generated clip looks great at small size and mushy on a big screen. FLUX Video Upscale — Black Forest Labs’ video super-resolution tool, upgraded on October 22, 2026 to reach 4K — takes a clip and rebuilds it larger and sharper, up to 3x, with the audio kept.
Think of it like this: your video is a small photo printed on a postage stamp. Upscaling doesn’t just stretch the stamp — it redraws the picture at poster size, filling in plausible detail. That “plausible” is the whole story: it looks sharper, but the new detail is the AI’s best guess, not recovered reality.
Two modes, one choice that matters:
- Precise (
creativity: 0) — stays faithful to the source, sharpens what is there. Use it when identity matters: faces, products, brand assets, footage of real people. - Creative (
creativity: 1, the default) — restores and invents fine detail more aggressively. Use it on generated footage, textures, crowds, and scenery. It does not preserve identity as strictly, so faces and products can drift.
Price, in plain numbers
BFL bills per megapixel-second of delivered output — that is, the megapixels in each output frame multiplied by the clip’s length in seconds. You are charged for delivered output only; input resolution, upscale factor, and prompts are not charged separately, and rejected clips cost nothing.
Dollar rates: BFL’s docs page states the formula but renders the rates without readable dollar figures in text form, so the figures below come from third-party price trackers that agree with each other (OpenRouter, aigoodpick) — treat them as vendor-tracked, not independently verified:
| Output | Precise | Creative | What this means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 seconds at 1080p | ~$0.70 | ~$1.00 | A phone clip, sharpened, for less than a coffee. |
| 10 seconds at 2K | ~$1.45 | ~$2.10 | Mid-tier delivery for client previews. |
| 10 seconds at 4K | ~$2.90 | ~$4.15 | The full upgrade — still cheaper than reshooting anything. |
No subscription is involved for API use: you top up credits on BFL and pay per clip. BFL claims it costs less than Topaz Astra 2 and runs twice as fast — that is BFL’s claim, with no published comparison, so treat it as marketing until you test it yourself.
Limits that shape every job: source clips max 20 seconds, 50MB, 2560×1440 (2K); upscale factor 1.5×–3× (default 2×); output frames capped at about 14.4 megapixels; aspect ratio preserved; audio kept.
Mini-tutorial: your first upscale in 5 steps
Dashboard path (no code):
- Open BFL’s dashboard and sign in (create an account if needed; top up a few dollars of credit).
- Open FLUX Video Upscale and upload your clip (mp4, under 20 seconds and 50MB — trim first if needed).
- Pick your mode: Precise for faces/products, Creative for scenery and AI footage. Set the upscale factor (2× is the default; 3× for the biggest jump).
- Optionally add a short prompt describing the clip’s content — this steers Creative mode toward the right kind of detail. Leave it empty for a neutral upscale.
- Submit, wait, download. Save the result promptly (delivery links expire). Compare it against the source before you deliver it to anyone.
API path (for batch work — copy, paste, replace two values):
curl -X POST https://api.bfl.ai/v1/flux-tools/video-upscale-v1 \
-H "x-key: YOUR_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"input_video": "https://example.com/your-clip.mp4",
"upscale_factor": 2, "creativity": 0}'
The response gives you a polling_url. Poll it until status flips to Ready, then download result.sample. That is the whole integration — one POST, one poll, one download.
Make money with it: the $5-per-clip upscale service
The play: creators, real-estate agents, and small shops all sit on libraries of soft phone footage and early AI clips that look bad on today’s big screens. Offer “I make your old videos look new” as a service: $5 per clip (under 20 seconds, 1080p Precise) or $29 for a 10-clip batch, delivered within 24 hours. Your cost per clip is under $1, so margin is 80%+.
7-day validation: Day 1, upscale 5 of your own old clips and post before/after split-screens. Day 2–3, message 20 local creators and agents with the split-screen and the $5 offer. Day 4–7, deliver paid orders; if 3+ people pay, raise the batch price and add a 4K tier at $12 per clip. If nobody pays, you spent a few dollars and learned that your audience doesn’t feel the pain — move on.
Why it can work: the buyer isn’t buying “AI” — they’re buying the feeling that their old footage is suddenly presentable. And unlike generation tools, upscaling has no prompt lottery: the input already exists, so results are predictable.
Pitfalls
- Creative mode changes faces and products. Never deliver a Creative upscale of a client’s product shot or testimonial without a side-by-side check. When identity matters, Precise is the only safe mode.
- Upscale last. Run it after editing and trimming — you pay for delivered output, so don’t pay to upscale footage you will cut.
- 20 seconds is a hard wall. Longer videos must be split first; a clip even slightly over is handled only up to the 20-second mark or rejected, so trim deliberately.
- It can’t fix broken source. Bad focus, wrong anatomy, garbled text — upscaling sharpens the flaw along with everything else.
- Don’t confuse it with generation. FLUX Video Upscale improves existing footage; it does not create video from text. For generation, see our FLUX 3 Max guide.
